How Can an Online Medical School Fight Brain Drain?
Nowadays, online medical school outfits are commonplace. People sign up for such courses for a number of reasons, but you may be surprised to learn that one of them is brain drain.
A student is not limited to just one kind of online training to become a medical professional. There are a variety of schools that address different needs for certification. There are nursing schools, nursing assistant schools, pharmacist schools, et cetera. But when you say "online medical school," it is generally understood that you mean training to become a doctor. And doctors are among the medical professionals in other countries that are most attracted to migrate, and take their practice into more developed locations.
This causes a "brain drain" effect, where developing nations find themselves losing their best and brightest medical professionals to a mass exodus. Ironically, it is developing nations that need medical professionals the most, and cannot afford to keep them. One cannot blame doctors in less progressive nations from seeking better lives abroad, but at the same time, they are denying their home countries the application of their skills.
Medicine is not a cheap course by a long shot. But those who can afford to go to medical school to begin with make the extra effort to find and enroll in the best schools - whether or not these are located within their home countries. It is another sad fact that many of the best medical schools are located in wealthier cities and nations. Many times, the young people who go abroad to study find their niche in an overseas environment, and don't come back to their home countries at all.
There are outreach programs, of course, and plenty of opportunities for all overseas-based doctors to visit third world countries and provide emergency medical services. But there is nothing like having skilled professionals within your borders. Medicine does not only involve treatment, for one thing - it also involves research, improving upon tried and tested methods. A country's medical profession depends on the contributions of the medical workers within its shores.
Medical schools that take their courses online aim to help doctors get their degrees without having to leave their home countries. It may be difficult to imagine how an online medical school could provide the kind of training that doctors require, but technological advancements have made it so that the simulations and interactive features made available to medical students all over the world are sophisticated enough to provide quality education.
