Are Online Engineering Schools Up to Par?
College is costly: this is something every caring parent knows about. Advanced degrees like Law, Medicine and Engineering could cost a person a lot more than a parent has set aside - and this is why thoughtful children take it upon themselves to shoulder part of the cost, or else to find ways around the major expenses. Among these major expenses are living allowance and transportation fees. And one can get around that by going to online schools, such as online engineering schools, online paralegal training courses, and the like.
One may be dubious as to the efficiency of online schools in meeting the practical requirements of higher education. Do online engineering schools really produce engineers that fit the bill? How about medical schools? Don't you need to be physically present at some training sites, in order to get the most out of your course?
Actually, you do; there is no disputing that. Nothing can take the place of practical knowledge, if you're especially after a well-rounded approach to professional training. But online schools understand that. Many accredited online schools that offer advanced education courses make a serious effort to integrate internship and other course requirements that require practical participation into their curriculum.
Sometimes advanced learning courses that are offered online or through mail are called "correspondence courses." There is a sort of negative stigma assigned to correspondence courses, but it is entirely unfounded. People think that just because a student can't afford the time to mingle with other students in a classroom setting, this student will not be able to learn as much as the others. And keeping up with the rest of the class is especially important for someone who aims to become a specialist in one's field of experience.
But it doesn't necessarily follow that you have to be physically present with the rest of your class in order to keep up. Medical schools, for example, only help a student keep up with the research and written parts of the courses that they offer - good online schools would be able to partner up with local organizations in order to maximize the experience gained by the student during practical application of the lessons learned.
In the case of online engineering schools, it would still depend on the discipline you want to specialize in - but if any practical training is required, a good online school should be able to allow for it.
